Manual Muscle Testing Flashcards
What is MMT?
A procedure for the evaluation of strength of individual muscles or muscle groups based on effective performance of movement in relation to gravity or manual resistance through the available ROM.
What does MMT follow?
ROM assessment
What does MMT measure?
the maximal contraction of a muscle or muscle group
What are 3 purposes of MMT?
- Determine amount of muscle power
- Baseline for intervention
- Determine impact on occupations
- Prevent deformities
- Determine AT need
- Assist in selection of occupations
- Evaluate intervention
What are the limitations of MMT?
cannot measure muscle endurance, coordination or performance capability
What is the procedure of MMT?
- Position
- Stabilise
- Palpate
- Observe
- Resist “break test”
- Grade
Name 3 contraindications of MMT
- Inflammation or pain
- Dislocation or unhealed fracture
- Recent surgery (particularly musculoskeletal)
- Myositis ossifications
- Fragile bone condition
- Tone problems
- Not performed on children
Name 3 precautions of MMT
- Osteoporosis
- Subluxation or joint hyper mobility
- Haemophilia
- Cardiovascular
- Abdominal surgery or hernia
- Fatigue that exacerbates condition
What tool is used to test grip strength?
dynamometer
What tool is used to test pinch strength?
Pinch gauge
Are grip and pinch strength tests valid?
Yes
How long do grip and pinch strength tests take to administer?
5 minutes
True or false: Grip and Pinch strength tests do not have good test-retest and inter-rater reliability?
False
True of false: Dynamometers and pinch gauges need to be calibrated regularly
True
What are the 5 factors affecting grip and pinch strength assessment?
- Gender
- Age
- Hand dominance
- Position of shoulder, elbow, forearm and wrist
- Position of body (sitting or standing).
