Functional Capacity Evaluation Flashcards
What is the functional capacity evaluation?
An objective assessment of an individual’s ability to perform work-related activity.
What is the FCE a measure of?
a measure of activity and activity limitation or occupational performance of a client, that is used to make recommendations for participation in work or the worker role while considering the person’s impairment, environment and other influencing factors
What is the FCE process?
- Review of medical records
- Interview
- Musculoskeletal screening
- Evaluation of physical performance
- Formation of recommendations and generation of a report.
When is an FCE indicated?
To identify a worker’s physical capabilities and restrictions, match an individual’s capabilities to work tasks, pre-employment and ongoing fitness to work assessment
Is the FCE standardised or non-standardised?
The FCE can be both, standardised or non-standardised (modified)
What is a standardised FCE?
Uses a global test battery such as WorkHab or J-Tech
The focused test approach is preferred as long as the safety, validity and reliability guidelines are addressed,.
What is a non-standardised FCE?
Incorporates many test items of standardised testing, allows for greater flexibility in assessment, practiced based evidence to support test techniques and items, can include specific job requirements and relevance of task to job.
What are the 3 types of FCE?
- Job specific evaluations
- Pre-employment
- Onsite FCE
What are the 3 models of FCE?
- Biomechanical
- Physiological
- Psychophysical
What are the 5 standards of care for the FCE?
- Safety
- Reliability
- Validity
- Objectivity
- Practicality
What precautions need to be taken with the FCE?
Adequate screening required, need procedures for monitoring the safety of the client and must be sufficiently demanding without aggravating the client’s condition.
