Define autocratic management
A management style where the leader makes all the decisions based on the policies and procedures.
Employees have no input.
Advantages of autocratic management
- Decisions are made quickly and easily as there is no discussion with staff.
- One way communication
Disadvantages of autocratic management
- No employee input, so decisions cant be enhanced.
- Employees don’t get the chance to develop skills or feel valued.
Define persuasive management
Manager makes all the decisions, then persuades employees of the benefits of those decisions.

Advantages of persuasive management
- Managers gain trust and support through persuasion.
- Quick, easy and clear decision making.
Disadvantages of persuasive management
- No opportunity for employees to enhance decision making.
- Communication is still poor from manager to employees.
Define consultative management
Manager consults with employees on issues before making the final decision.
Broadens the ideas brought to the business.
-Two way communication (but is centralized)
Advantages of consultative management
- Broadens ideas brought to the business
- Seeking employee suggestions will boost their motivation (sense of purpose).
Disadvantages of consultative management
- Slows down decision making
- Some employees ideas will be ignored, causing resentment.
Define participative management
Management style where ideas are shared and decisions are made by employees and the manager.
Positive: recognizes the skills and abilities of employees.
-Two way communication (but is decentralized)
eg- google
Advantages of participative management
- Recognizes skills and abilities of employees (empowering them).
- Team work will lead to a final decision
Disadvantages of participative management
- Time consuming
- May cause conflict as some ideas will be disregarded.
Define laissez faire
Management style where all decision making is done by employees while the manager has no role.
Manager may still set objectives. (Employees don’t work together, its more set tasks for them to complete themselves).
Advantages of laissez faire
- Very trusting and empowering
- Can be creative with high level of responsibility
Disadvantages of laissez faire
Can lead to a loss of control or conflict between employees.
