management of hazards Flashcards
what is integrated risk management?
incorporates identification of the hazard, analysis of risks, establishing priorities, public awareness and review of the process
governments then use this strategy in the form of the three ps
what are the three ps?
prediction
prevention
preparation / protection
what is prediction?
the ability to monitor in order to give warnings
what is an example of how a hazard can be predicted?
volcanoes - siesometers can be used to pinpoint earthquakes through magma movement
example of how a prediction affected an outcome?
mt st helens gave wrong prediction, didnt get out in time
what is prevention?
methods to prevent potential impacts, such as building infrastructure
examples of how a location used prevention?
mt sakurajima - built shelters that could withstand a 50kg volcanic bomb for the 10,000 who lived near
mt pinatobo - built houses with roof pitches of 25 degrees so ash slid off and didn’t collapse the house
what is preparation?
how people can be prepared and educated
what is an example of preparation?
mt sakurajima - children in the schools have to wear hard hats as part of their uniform
what is community prepardeness?
also known as risk sharing attempts by community to reduce loss of life and property evacuation education shelters emergency kits
what is the disaster risk management cycle?
the on going process by which governments, businesses and society plan for and reduce the impact of disasters, react during or following and how to recover after an event
in the DRMC what does appropriate steps in all areas lead to?
greater preparedness, better warnings and reduced vulnerability
hat does the complete cycle of the DRMC result in?
public policies and plans that modifying the causes of a hazard or mitigate the effects that it had on buildings etc
what are the three stages in DRMC?
predisaster
response
post disaster
what stages are including in pre disaster?
risk management
mitigation
praparation
