a feeding tube inserted nasally and then advanced to the GI tract

used for patients who need long term enteral feedings
a gastrostomy is made surgically, a PEG is inserted

Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy
dual access tube for long term feedings
Bolus feedings
an intermittent feeding of a specific amount of enteral product set intervals during a 24 hour period, q 4 hours
Continuous feeding
similar to IV therapy, small amounts are infused continuously over a specificized time
Cyclic feeding
same as continuous but stopped for a specific time in each 24 hour period
What is Refeeding syndrome?
life threatening condition when nutrition is begun during a state of starvation
s/s of refeeding syndrome?
HF
peripheral edema
rhabdomyolysis
seizures
hemolysis
how to prevent refeeding syndrome?
carefully assessing and managing nutrition needs early before a patient is severely malnourished
Peripheral parenteral nutrition
administered through a canula or catheter
