Male reproductive Anatomy (Cats + Dogs) Flashcards
What is the Pampiniform plexus?
The convoluted mesh structure, formed by the testicular VEIN - which surrounds the testicular ARTERY
What divides the testicles in the scrotum?
The testicular septum
Name the 9 structures which form the male reproductive system
- Testicles
- Epididymis
- Scrotum
- Spermatic cord
- Urethra
- Penis
- Prepuce
- Prostate gland
- Bulbo-urethral gland
State the 3 functions of the male reproductive system
- Produce the male gamete - spermatozoon
- Produce seminal fluid
- Facilitate mating
Does the Canine and Feline reproductive system differ?
Yes
Where is the Scrotum
+
Where is it located?
- A skin covered structure
- Situated between the hind legs of dogs
- Between anus + prepuce of the cat
- Situated outside of the abdominal cavity
Why is the scrotum situated outside of the abdominal cavity + body?
To allow for optimum temperature, for spermogenesis to occur
How are testicles seperated in the scrotum?
By the testicular septum
Are the testicles more mobile in the cat or dog?
Dog
Which testicle is more cranial, and which is more caudal?
Left = Caudal
Right = Cranial
Name the artery + vein that supplies the testicles
Testicular artery
+
Testicular veins
Where does the testicular artery branch off from, in the heart?
Directly from the Aorta
What are the 4 functions of the testicles?
- Production of male gametes (sperm) by Spermogenesis
- Produce the nutritive fluid for sperm, by the Sertoli cells
- Production of the 2 hormones =
* Oestrogen, by the Sertoli cells
* Testosterone, by the Leydig cells
Where does the Epididymis sit?
Alongside each testicle, in the scrotum
How is sperm carried to the Epididymis?
Via the efferent ducts
