Male Genitalia Flashcards
What are the internal male genitalia?
Testis, epididymis, ductus deferens, accessory sex glands (prostate, seminal vesicles, bulbourethral glands)
What are the external male genetalia?
Penis, scrotum and tunics of the testes
Embryologically, where does the internal genitalia arise form?
Above the pelvic floor from the urogenital ridge
Embryologically, where does the external genitalia arise from?
Urogenital sinus below the pelvic floor.
What is the retrovesical pouch?
A peritoneal reflection from the posterior wall of the urinary bladder onto the anterior wall of the rectum.
In the male, what is the lowest point in the abdominal cavity?
Retrovesical pouch
Where is the sperm produced?
In the testis
Which testis is usually the biggest?
The left
On which side of the testis does the epididymis lie?
Posteromedial side
What is the connective tissue investing each testis called?
Tunica albuginea
What is the appendix of the testis a remnant of?
Müllerian duct
What three parts does the epididymis consist of?
Head, body and tail
What is the appendix of the epididymis a remnant of?
The mesonephros
Does the testis and epididymis share the connective tissue?
No
Where does the testes originally develop?
In the abdominal cavity
What is the porcessus vaginalis testis?
A peritoneal diverticulum that guides the testis down into the scrotum
Processus vaginalis testis will remain as what layer?
Tunica vaginalis of the testis
What does the tunica vaginalis enclose?
It is a closed serous sheath that envelops the testis and epididymis. The visceral layer (epiorchium) lies on top of the tunica albuginea and cover those parts of the testes not covered by epididymis. It also covers most of the epididymis and reflects into the parietal layer (periorchium) at the exit site of the spermatic cord
Between the epididymis and testis there is a sinus. What is it called
The sinus of the epididymis, bounded by the superior and inferior ligaments of the epididymis.
