Q

What are the components of the first pharyngeal arch?

A

Consist of the maxillary and mandibular process.

Meckel’s cartilage —> incus and malleus
Premaxilla, maxilla, zygomatic bone, part of the temporal bone.

Muscles of mastication (masseter, temporalis and pterygoids), anterior belly of digastric, mylohyoid, tensor tympani, tensor palatini.

Nerve: mandibular branch of trigeminal.

First arch also contributes to the dermis of the face, sensory supply to the skin is by the trigeminal nerve.

Muscles: stapedius, stylohyoid, posterior belly of digastric, auricular, muscles of facial expression.

Nerve: facial nerve
