Magnetism And Electromagnetism(p) Flashcards
What are magnets?
Any material/object that produces a magnetic field
What are examples of magnets?
Bar magnet
Earth
Horse shoe magnet
What are the field lines on a magnet?
Mines drawn around a magnet connecting North Pole to South Pole
What are the direction of arrows at different poles?
Arrows out at north and in at south
What happens when two of the same poles are together?
Repulsion takes place from the indirection of the magnetic fields
How is the strength of magnetic fields shown?
By the the density of the field lines
What are permanent magnets?
Produce there own magnetic field all the time
What are induced magnets?
Only have magnetic fields temporarily (always attractive to permanent magnets)
What magnetic materials lose and gain magnetism quickly ?
Soft materials
What materials gain and lose magnetism slowly?
Hard materials
What happens when an electrical current, flows through a material?
A magnetic field is always produced
What is a an electromagnet?
Electric current produces there own magnetic field. Solenoid with iron core
What happens when the current for an electromagnet is switched off??
Electromagnet disappears
How do you increase strength of electromagnet?
-increase current
-increase number of turns in solenoid(same length)
reduce length of solenoid (same turns)
-add soft iron core
What is the motor affect?
A wire carrying current in the presence of a magnetic field will experience a force
