Energy Changes Flashcards
What si different chemicals have?
Different amount of energy
What is on the y and x axis in a reaction profile?
Y axis: energy
X axis: progress of reaction
What is an exothermic reaction?
Energy is lost to surroundings(combustion)( heats up)
What is endothermic reaction?
Energy is taken in from surroundings(energy absorbed)(cools down)
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy reactant particles need to collide with each other?
Higher activation, higher line in graph
Lower activation energy, lower line on graph
What is bonds energy?
Energy required to break one mole of particular covalent bond
Is bond breaking exothermic or endothermic
Endothermic
Is bond formation exothermic and endothermic
Exothermic
What is the equation for energy change?
Energy required to break bonds — energy released by forming bonds
If negative answer; then exothermic
If positive answer, then endothermic
What is la chatelaines principle?
Changing conditions of reversible reaction, chase positioning of equilibrium to shift to try and counteract change
What does equilibrium do during different levels of pressure?
High pressure will be more to side with less particles(endothermic
Low pressure will be more to side with high particles(exothermic)
What does la chatelaines principle suggest with different temperature levels?
Temperature decrease, equilibrium move to endothermic way
Temperature increase, equilibrium move to exothermic way
