What is Lymphoedema?
Swelling resulting from increased fluid in the interstitial space due to failure of lymphatic drainage
What causes Lymphoedema?
Primary - congenital malformation of lymphatic system, presents in early life (Milroy’s)
Secondary - damage to/obstruction of lymphatic system
-filaria infection
-cellulitis
-malignancy
-post-op
How does lymphoedema present?
Chronic non-pitting oedema
Affects legs, progresses w/ age
What investigations are appropriate in suspected lymphoedema?
Lymphoscintography
Exclude other causes of oedema (CCF, renal disease, DVI)
What is the management of lymphoedema?
Elevation
Compression stockings
Physical massage
Long term a/b for recurrent cellulitis
