Lymphatic and Glands Flashcards
Describe the spleen’s anatomical location.
left hypochondrium posterior to the stomach
Describe the blood supply and venous drainage of the spleen
The splenic artery is a direct branch of the coeliac trunk
Splenic vein (unites with the superior mesenteric vein to form the portal vein)
What type of cells are matured in the spleen?
B cells complete maturation after leaving the bone marrow
What other functions are the spleen responsible for?
major filtration unit to clear blood of damaged erythrocytes, bacteria, etc
What is the difference between red and yellow marrow?
called red marrow because of the great number of erythrocytes being produced there.
yellow marrow because of the accumulation of large quantities of fat and the absence of hemopoiesis in the shafts of these bones.
What part of long bones houses only yellow marrow?
diaphyses
What is compact or lamellar bone?
makes up almost all of an adult skeleton, is more organized and is produced more slowly
What is cancellous or woven bone?
the collagen fibres and bone crystals are irregularly arranged
the diameters of the fibres vary
What happens when we age related to red and yellow marrow?
Red marrow reduces and yellow marrow increases and infiltrates more to those spaces where there is red marrow
What is the function of the thymus gland and is it a primary or secondary lymphoid organ?
Maturation and education of T lymphocytes via positive and negative selection. It is a primary lymphoid organ (along with the bone marrow).
What are the two broad divisions histologically of the thymus gland?
Thymic cortex and Thymic medulla
What is the blood supply and venous drainage of the thymus gland?
Internal thoracic artery, inferior thyroid artery, superior thyroid artery
internal thoracic, inferior thyroid and left brachiocephalic veins.
The spleen does not have a cortex and medulla. What does it have instead?
red and white pulp
What encases the spleen?
dense capsule, and there are connective tissue trabeculae, which provide internal support for the spleen, and carry the blood vessels into the spleen.
What is found in white pulp?
contains lymphoid aggregations, mostly lymphocytes,T (mainly T-helper) and B-cells and macrophages which are arranged around the arteries.
