Alimentary Overview Flashcards
What are the parts of the alimentary system?
oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine,
What are the two types of organs in the alimentary tract?
digestive tract
accessory organs
What are the accessory organs?
salivary glands, tongue, teeth, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, appendix
What are the parts of the small intestine?
duodenum, jejunum, ileum
What are the typical 4 layers of the alimentary tract?
mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, serosa/adventitia
What are the 3 layers of mucosa?
epithelium, lamina propria, muscularis mucosae
What is the lamina propria?
a thin layer of loose connective tissue that lies beneath the epithelium
What is the muscularis mucosae?
a layer of smooth muscle
What is the submucosa composed of?
connective tissue that is thicker than the mucosal layer
What does the submucosa contain?
numerous small glands, blood vessels and parasympathetic nerves that form the submucosal plexus
What is the muscularis layer composed of?
a thick layer of muscle tissue that wraps around the sub mucosa. it is comprised of inner circular muscle and outer longitudinal muscle.
What is the adventitia?
Adventitia is an outer layer of fibrous connective tissue surrounding an organ
What is the serosa?
outer lining of organs in the abdomen
What is the serosa’s function?
to reduce friction
What is the difference between the serosa and the adventitia?
serosa is tissue that is fixed ie. not the oral cavity, upper end of the oesophagus in the chest, or thorax
