Lung histopathology Flashcards
histopathology of lungs
air spaces are characteristic of lung tissue
cilia appear as a fuzzy edge
bronchiole = white space
what is hypertrophy?
cell gets bigger
what is hyperplasia?
increased number of cells
what do pneumocytes type 1 do?
air blood barrier/ gas exchange
what do pneumocytes type 2 do?
surfactant production
what do dust cells do?
lung macrophages, phagocytosis
what do bronchiolar arteries do?
oxygenated blood supply
what do club cells do?
serous secretion
changes observed in asthma
thickening bronchial walls
hypertrophy and hyperplasia of smooth muscle layer
hyperplasia and hypertrophy of mucinous glands
immune filtration especially eosinophils
mucus lining bronchial lumen is thicker and contains immune cells
accumulation of mucus in bronchial lumen
what colour do eosinophils appear in histology?
pink
what is the acellular pink line in histology?
basement membrane
what happens in pneumonia?
bronchiole filled with mucus and immune cells - neutrophils
what is a common fungal lung infection?
aspergillus
chest x-ray of lobar pneumonia
large patch
chest x-ray of bronchiole pneumonia
focal, small patches
