what is lay epidemiology?
term used to describe the way in which people may use a combination of personal, familial and social sources of knowledge, alongside professionally delivered information, to try and make sense of an event or problem
prevention paradox
a measure that brings large benefits to the community offers little to each participating individual
what is candidacy?
describes the ways in which people’s eligibility for medical attention and intervention is jointly negotiated between individuals and health services
help seeking
people come to identify and seek to present themselves as having needs to which health services can respond. People must recognise that they are candidates for healthcare and act on that candidacy.
what is self-management?
an individual’s ability to manage the symptoms, treatment, physical and psychological consequences and lifestyle changes inherent in living with a chronic condition.
what does efficacious self-management encompass?
ability to monitor one’s condition and to effect the cognitive, behavioural and emotional responses necessary to maintain a satisfactory quality of lif
what is cardiac rehab?
comprehensive, long term programmes involving medical evaluation, prescribed exercise, cardiac risk factor modification, education and counselling.
what is short-termism?
excessive focus on short-term results at the expense of long-term interests.
what is fatalism?
a belief that all events are predetermined and so inevitable
submissive attitude to events
What is habitus?
connection between class culture and lifestyles shaped by an individual's living conditions and engenders practices adapted to these conditions
