Q

Why is right to withdraw/protection from harm and ethical issue when planning an observation in child psychology

A

Parents need to be given the right to withdraw their children and the children’s results at any point. Children and parents should be told they can leave the study at any point and not suffer from any consequences as a result. Incentives, such a sweet, should not be offered in exchange for participation

Q

Why is confidentiality and issue when planning a study and child psychology

A

All information about children as confidential. No names of children all the parents should be used, if needed a pseudonym should be used instead.

Q

Why is debriefing ethical concern when investigating children psychology

A

Parents and children were suitable must have the study explain to them at an appropriate time so that they feel comfortable about it.

Q

Why does the observation setting need to be considered when planning an observation child psychology

A

In a naturalistic observation it must take place with the behaviour wouldn’t normally be observed such as at home or to nursery and not in any situations all locations would be inappropriate for the children.

Q

How does operationalisation need to be considered when planning observation in child psychology

A

You need to ensure that the variables of interest are defined and measured so the child’s behaviour can be coded for objectively and easily this allows the comparison of data when drawing conclusions.

Q

How does interrater reliability need to be considered when planning observation in child psychology

A

Using a number of different observers allows the interrater reliability to be established by comparing their observations. Using cameras allows the children’s behaviour to be watched back on the cross checking of tallies to be checked for consistency

Q

How does observer affects need to be considered when planning a child psychology observation

A

The presence of the observer may affect the children’s behaviour and therefore affect the results, so the use of video cameras or one-way mirrors should be considered to reduce these affects

Q

How does control of variables need to be considered when planning observation chart psychology

A

In natural observations it is not possible to control for all extraneous variables such as the child height. These variables could affect the child’s behaviour, so any incidences of this will need to be recorded. If they’re not recorded it will be difficult to draw valid conclusions. This is more easily controlled for a structured observation as parents can fill in questionnaires about the children before the observation starts

Q

How does the setting need to be considered when planning observation and child psychology

A

For children to exhibit naturally occurring behaviour they need to be observed in a place I feel comfortable in. This can be anywhere such as the school playground, at home, in their three, or in a classroom. In a structured observation the children will be in an artificial setting that has been constructed in a particular way to test the child’s behaviour. This will involve staged events and carefully planned equipment

Q

What is a comparison point of naturalistic and structured observations in terms of ecological validity

A

Structured observation has less ecological validity Dan the naturalistic observation as the environment is artificial and therefore cannot be generalised to real life events. Structured observation is set up so behaviour measured may not be as spontaneous as behaviour observed using the naturalistic observation method.

Q

What is the comparison point between naturalistic and structured observations in terms of demand characteristics

A

Children in the lab are more likely to show demand characteristics down in the natural environment because they are aware of taking part in something strange or different to a normal routine, so may alter their behaviour accordingly and like naturalistic observations. In a naturalistic observation the researcher has to wait for the behaviour to be displayed rose in a structured observation I contrived situation can be used to encourage the behaviour more readily

Q

Why does informed consent to have to be considered when doing an observation child psychology

A

Parental or guardian consent on the child’s behalf must be going to before starting children because children are not able to give consent themselves. This involves explain to the adults what will happen during the research. Research is encouraged asked children for permission in some way. However, this should not be in place of asking parents due to comprehension level and vulnerability. Consent and permission is also needed for anyinstitution in which the observational be taking place e.g. school if it takes place within a class in a playground
