LT13 Longitudinal Research In Child Psyc Flashcards
When is data collected in a longitudinal study
Data is first collected at the outset of the study, and maybe then gathered repeatedly throughout the length of the study at regular intervals
What methods of research can be used in longitudinal study and given example of a longitudinal study
Any method of research can be used to collect the data or a variety of methods as long as it is consistent overtime. For example the EP PE projectfollowed 3000 children between the ages of 3 to 7 between the years of 1997 and 2003 to find out the effects of preschool education, using observations and interviews with parents and staff
What can longitudinal studies also be within example
They can also be individual psychological studies such as the study of the check twins that lasted from the age of seven when they’re found, up to adult hood
What do longitudinal studies allow psychologist to do
They allow researchers to understand the development of behaviour in the long term rather than just a mere snapshot
How longitudinals studies in child psychology hi validity
Longitudinal studies are high velocity this is because a lot of data is collected over a long period of time rather than just a single snapshot of the behaviour. Quantitated and qualitative data can also be gathered meaning triangulation can be achieved to ensure the findings are considered in greater detail
How is showing development overtime advantage of longitudinal studies
Longitudinal studies show development overtime as I conducted over an extended period of time changes and development of the child can be studied, rather than being a snapshot of development at one time. variables that affect development can be systematically studied and examined in terms of long-term effects on the cross sectional studies
How do longitudinal studies controll for participant variables
Longitudinal studies control for Protestant variables are using the same group of children every time, Individual differences are minimised and prevented from affecting the results. This allows for direct comparison to be made of the time i’m like cross-sectional studies which use different groups of children
How do longitudinal studies allow you to establish the cause and effect relationship
As they gather ongoing data concerning development rather than retrospective data, it does not rely on the memory of the children or parents involved. For example the development of the track twins research tracked over many years, from the age of seven when they’re found through to adult life when the twins married and had children
How to longitudinal studies in child psychology suffer from low population validity
Longitudinal study suffer from low population validity because when studying a specific group of children then maybe the cohort of fact, as one cohort of group of children may be affected by cultural and social attitudes of the time, which may not be similar or relevant to other groups at a different time. As a result the findings may not be generalised to wider population is, such as children from another time period and may limit for practical application to current issues
How long is your study suffer from practical problems
Longitudinal study suffer from practical problems because they’re very time-consuming and expensive as they are conducted over a long period of time to track children’s development, which requires a lot of resources as well as researchers hours.
How do longitudinal study suffer from high dropout rate
Longitudinal study suffer from high dropout rate because parents may withdraw their children from the research due to the length of time the children need to be studied for, moving away from the research Area, a change in circumstances or even death. This can lead to buy a sample of participants of a particular character which affects the overall generalisability of the findings the wider populations.
Had a longitudinal study is have ethical issues
Longitudinal studies can suffer from ethical issues as they take place over a long period of time, they can be very intrusive as I repeatedly impinge upon daily life of not just a child but of the family in general, they may come to resent this aspect of the study. It is also important that informed consent and right to withdraw is continuously repeated throughout the length of the study to maintain the ethical standards
What do longitudinalStudies do
They study the same participants over a length of time, documenting changes in behaviour over a period
