Q

What did Cockett and Tripp find about negative effects of divorce?

A

Cockett and Tripp found that negative effects of divorce could be minimised by parents preparing their children for the forthcoming changes. For example if one parent is about to move out of the family home children should be warned about this step as soon as possible.

Q

What was found about attachment figures and by whom?

A

The Robertsons conducted naturalistic observations on children who suffered deprivation while their mother’s were in hospital, demonstrated how good substitute care could reduce PDD. The Robertsons created a replacement attachment figure in Joyce Robertson for the children to bond with and maintained their familiar reutined in a hospital nursery which meant the children accepted their mothers reunion and the effect of PDD were reduced.

Q

What was said about the importance of avoiding open conflict?

A

Conflict is clearly a factor in divorce as found by Cockett and Tripp. In order to reduce the negative effects of conflict it should be kept to a minimum and not witnessed by the children. Parents should not talk negatively of each other in front of the child.

Q

What did the Robertsons say about maintaining contact?

A

The Robertsons found that to ensure the effects of deprivation are reduced when a parent or child goes into hospital there should be frequent and regular visits/contact with the parents for the child to maintain that attachment. For example, in the case of Jane, she did not suffer the effects of PDD, because her routine was maintained and she had regular visits from her father.

Q

What is important about the start of daycare?

A

Delaying the use of daycare - a form of short term deprivation - until children are older has been shown to reduce the negative impacts. Psychologists, such as Belsky and Rovine, have argued that older children and more able to cope in this situation, and so it has been recommended to delay the use of daycare until the child is at least 2 years of age.

Q

What was found about children blaming themselves?

A

Rutter’s Isle of White research found that children who experienced the death of a parent fared better than children separated by high-conflict divorce. This was because one of the reasons children cope better is that they are less likely to blame themselves whereas with a divorce they often blame themselves for the break up.
