LT2 Bowlbys 44 Theives Flashcards
When and where was Bowlby is 44 juvenile sees study carried out
The study was carried out between 1936 and 1939 using 88 children from the London child guidance clinic where Bowlby works as a psychiatrist
What was the sample in Boulby is 44 juvenile theives study
The sample looked at 44 juvenile thieves in comparison to a control group of 44 juveniles who are at the clinic but not as thieves.
What was the purpose of having control group and Bowlby’s study
A control group was established in order to see how commonly maternal deprivation occurred in nondelinquent populations. This group consisted of individuals who have been referred to the same clinic for emotional problems, not for committing crimes. Both boys and girls are part of sample, and all children live with their biological parents
What did the psychologist do in Boulby study of 44 jt
A psychologist carried out mental test to assess intelligence, as well as undertaking an assessment of the child emotional attitudes.
What was built up about the children and who did it in Bowlbys study
The children were interviewed on the case histories built up of all the children. This was done by an independent social worker noting the child psychiatric case history. Both the testing in case history lasted an hour and reports are harder to Bowlby.
What did Bowlby himself do in the study
Bowlby interviewed the children and the mother separately to discover whether the child had experienced any periods of prolonged separation.
What did Bowlby do with the data gathered in his study
From all the data gathered, but we sorted that these into six different character types for example normal, depressed and affectionless
In Bowlby’s findings in a study what did you find out about the character types of thieves
42 out of the 44 thieves had an abnormal character to type with only two out of the 44 showing a normal character type.
What were some of the thieves classified as
14 of the 44 thieves were classified as having affectionate psychopathic which means a lack of warmth of feeling for others and shows no shame or responsibility for their actions.
What was found about control group in Boulby study
None of the control group are classed as affectionless psychopathy
What did Bowlby find out about what some of the thieves have experienced
17 of the 44 thieves had experience maternal deprivation for more than six months
What were Bowlby’s conclusions from his study
Maternal deprivation when you’re young effects emotional adjustment: lacking emotion and feelings of guilt or Morse. Such an affectionless character can lead to antisocial behaviour are such a stealing and other types of criminal behaviour
What is the strength of the information bowlby gathered from his study
The information Bowlby gathered was in-depth and detailed as vast amounts of the data from Case histories and interviews with the children and their families was gathered. Bowlby also gathered quantitated data through the psychological testing, this combination of quantitated and qualitative data allowed for translation to be achieved increasing the validity of his results about deprivation
What was Bowlby able to do with his findings
Bowlby was able to cross check his findings on deprivation by comparing the results of psychological tests with the interview data increasing the reliability of the results. However the study collected a lot of retrospective data, by asking the children to parents about their childhood experiences, this decreases the reliability of the data
What is the strength of Bowlby’s procedure
An independent social worker was used to gather the data, maintaining objectivity in the data collection and analysis. This is sure that the results were not biased towards bogeys on Siri. However Bowlby did conduct the interviews with the children and the parents himself. He also interpreted his findings in light of his own theory, meaning results may suffer from research bias
