Lower Resp. Tract Dz Flashcards
Aspiration pneumonia/ grangrenous pneumonia
Caused by inhalation of large amounts of foreign material
Inadvertent passage of stomach tube down trachea during admin of milk or liquids meds**
CS of aspiration pneumonia
Depression, polypnea, dyspnea, coughing, foul breath, fever
Crackles and wheezes
Dx aspiration pneumonia
Hx of acute onset following stomach tubing
CS and rds (cr. ventral lung consolidation)
Differentials for aspiration pneumonia
Acute bronchopneumonia, septicemia
Tx of aspiration pneumonia
Abx long term
NSAIDs + corticosteroids IV
Guarded prognosis
Metastatic or Embolic pneumonia/ pulmonary thromboembolism
Cd. vena cava thrombosis and embolic pulmonary aneurysm
Most common in feedlot cattle (lactic acidosis from highly fermentable feed) >1yr old
What causes Metastatic or Embolic pneumonia/ pulmonary thromboembolism
Septic conditions can cause vena caval septic thrombosis (phlebitis, mastitis, fucobacterium, staph, etc) → septic thromboembolism of pulmonary arterial system and multi-focal abscessation of the lungs
CS of Metastatic or Embolic pneumonia/ pulmonary thromboembolism
Expiratory dyspnea and groaning, coughing, wheezing over entire lung field
Chr: right heart failure with jug distention and brisket edema
Pathognomic signs of Metastatic or Embolic pneumonia/ pulmonary thromboembolism
Resp. signs esp with widespread wheezing and hemoptysis and anemia
Dx of Metastatic or Embolic pneumonia/ pulmonary thromboembolism
CBC: anemia, hyperglobininemia, ↑ BR and liver enzymes
Rads: lung abscesses
Pulmonary listeriosis
Listeria monocytogenes contaminate feed and cause pneumonia in feedlot cattle
First 60d after exposure
CS of pulmonary listeriosis
Resp. signs, encephalitis, conjunctivitis
Tx of pulmonary listerosis
High dose penicillin or oxytetracycline
Mycotic pneumonia
Ruminants get pulm infections from coccidioides immitis (cattle, SW US)
Aspergillus, histoplasma and candida rare
