LOWER LIMB: Pelvic Girdle and Gluteal Region Flashcards
Difference between the Greater and Lesser Sciatic Foramina
GREATER SCIATIC FORAMEN = structures passing from pelvis into the gluteal region
whereas LESSER SCIATIC FORAMEN = communication between perineum of pelvis + gluteal region
Ligaments associated with the greater sciatic foramen
- posterior sacroiliac ligament
- sacrospinous (separates the two sciatic foramina)
- sacrotuberous ligament
Ligaments associated with the lesser sciatic foramen
- sacrotuberous ligament
Innervation of the superficial gluteus region
G. max = inferior gluteal nerve - ventral rami (L5, S1, S2)
G. medius = Sup Glut. N branch (L4, L5, S1)
G. Minimus = Sup Glut. N branch (L4, L5, S1)
+ Tensor Fascia Lata = Branch of Superior Gluteal N (L4, L5)
Actions of the Glut. Maximus
Extension of hip and Lateral Rotatiion
Actions of the tensor fasciae latate, G. medius, and G. maximus
Medial Rotation of the hip joint
flexion, abduction
+knee extension
What muscles attach to the iliotibial tract and function of said tract
The iliotibial tract is found laterally on the leg, from the iliac crest and inserts at the knee
Is is comprised by attachments from the tensor fascia lata. and G. maximus
*it provids stab. to the lateral aspect of the knee joint
What is the function of the pubofemoral ligament on the hip joint?
Prevents over-abduction of the hip
