Gland Histology Flashcards
Identify the gland and its type
EXOCRINE - PAROTID GLAND
* Duct
* Serous secretory acini giving it a specific staining intensitiy
ID: Gland & Gland Type, why?
EXOCRINE, SALIVARY SUBLINGUAL
* d/t mucus excretory glands = less dye uptake = paler
ID: Gland & Gland Type, Why?
EXOCRINE, SALIVARY SUBMANDIBULAR
* mixture of mucus and serous acini therefore mixture of heavy staining and pale staining cells
ID: from left, middle, right
What is produced from these glands?
THYROID COLLOID = hormone is bound to a glycoprotein, and this stored hormone is called ‘colloid’.
FOLLICULAR CELL = thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
PARAFOLLICULAR CELL = CALCITONIN
What is this gland?
Thyroid
What is this gland and what does it secrete (and by what cells)
PARATHYROID GLANDS
* note present adipocytes
* there are 2 cell populations present
CHIEF CELLS = PARATHYROID HORMONE
• more purple staining, more numerous, smaller cells
OXYPHIL CELLS = OXYTOCIN
• pinker staining, less prevalent, larger cells
What is this gland and what is the function of the hormone it produces?
Parathyroid gland = PTH
regulates plasma calcium by promoting bone resorption and increasing renal calcium resorption
What is this gland?
ID layers
ENDOCRINE ADRENAL GLAND
CORTEX
ZG = Mineralcortico.
ZF = Corticosteroids
ZR = Sex Steroids
MEDULLA = Catecholamines
*ZF and ZG stain darker, with ZF arranged in cord-like structures
What hormone is secreted from this?
* note the outer cortex
= ALDOSTERONE
What hormones are secreted from this structure?
* note the cord-like structure with prominent strands of tissue
= GLUCOCORTICOIDS = CORTISOL
= regulate blood glucose and glycogen synthesis; stress reponse
What is this structure and name its components and what do they secrete?
PITUITARY GLAND
Anterior Pit. = Darker staining = secretes TROPHIC HORMONES
Posterior Pit. = Lighter staining = ADH & Oxytocin
What is this structure?
?Significant components and secretions?
PANCREAS
* exocrine acinar cells = pancr. fluids for digestion
*endocrine islets of langerhans =
A = glucagon
B = insulin
* note interlobular ducts
