Lower Limb: Nerves Flashcards
State the nerve supply to the lower limb
Lumbosacral plexus
L1-S4
What does the lumbosacral plexus supply ?
Abdominal wall
Pelvis
Perineum
LOWER LIMB
State the nerves of the lumbosacral plexus
Femoral
Obturator
Sciatic
Numerous smaller nerves
Femoral nerve roots
L2-4
Obturator nerve roots
L2-4
Sciatic nerve roots
L4-S3
What does the femoral nerve supply ?
Anterior compartment of the thigh
Skin of the anterior thigh
What does the obturator nerve supply ?
Skin and muscles of the medial thigh
What does the sciatic nerve supply ?
Posterior compartment of the thigh
What does the femoral nerve continue as into the leg ?
Continues as the saphenous nerve
Supplying the skin of the medial leg and foot
What does the sciatic nerve split into ?
Common fibular (peroneal) nerve
Tibial nerve
L5
Lateral leg
S1
Heel and sole of foot
L1
Underneath inguinal ligament
L3
Anterior Knee
S1 and S2
Back of the lower limb
Where is the lumbar plexus located ?
Formed within the psoas major muscle
Found anterior to the transverse process of the lumbar vertebrae.
Features of the lumbar plexus
Has motor and sensory branches
L1-L5
State the branches of the lumbar plexus
Lateral cutaneous branch
Femoral branch
Obturator branch
Lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh
Supplies skin on the lateral thigh
Passes out medially to the anterior superior iliac spine underneath the inguinal ligament, where it is vulnerable to compression.
Meralgia parasthesia
Compression of the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh.
Occurs commonly in pregnancy.
What do L4 and L5 nerves come together to form ?
The lumbosacral trunk
State the sensory branches of the femoral nerve
Medial and intermediate cutaneous femoral nerves
Saphenous nerve
Describe the location of the femoral nerve
Descends behind the inguinal ligament
Passes through the femoral triangle in the thigh
