LOTF Characters Flashcards
What is the purpose of Ralph?
Idealism (e,g “Daddy’s ship”, can’t see why Roger would sharpen a stick at both ends)
Flawed Democracy (e.g killed Simon, no control over the hunters)
How is Ralph presented in the start?
Ralph is presented as a perfect idealistic leader who keeps the kids organised however can’t stand up for Piggy
“His name’s not fatty its Piggy”
“This is a good island” “We ought to have more rules”
Foreshadows downfall
“the boy with fair hair lowered himself” Contrast
Fair - Justice, society Lowered - Hell, downwards, worsened
How is Ralph presented in the middle?
Ralph is shown to be a flawed leader who can’t think or control anyone whilst having his own “id” come out but clings onto the fire

“That curtain flapped in his head and he forgot what he had been driving at”
How is Ralph presented in the end?
Ralph takes responsibility as he “stepped forward” but lost his innocence in exchange for an understanding of the id
“wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart and the fall through the air of a true wise friend Piggy”
What is the purpose of Piggy?
Represents rationality, knowledge and logic
How is Piggy presented in the start?
Piggy is presented as being weak and vulnerable,
“shorter than the fair boy and very fat” “ass-mar”
“intimidated by his uniformed superiority and the offhand authority in Merridew’s voice”
yet rational and crucial to Ralph’s leadership
“we ought to have a meeting” “nobody dont know we’re here”
“what intelligence had been shown was traceable to Piggy”
How is Piggy presented in the middle?
Piggy remains loyal to Ralph and becomes afraid of Jack who isn’t loyal. He’s the only one who stays the same and holds onto civilisation.

“I got the conch!” “Now you done it. You been rude about his hunters”
How is Piggy presented in the end?
Piggy becomes brave enough to stand up to Jack but dies with the democracy on the island which is described childishly
