Bioenergetics, Biology Flashcards
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplasts in leaves
How is sunlight absorbed?
By a pigment called chlorophyll in chloroplasts
What is sunlight used for in photosynthesis?
To convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose
Is photosynthesis endo or exothermic?
Endothermic
Where does carbon dioxide diffuse in leaves?
Stomata
What controls the size of the stomata?
Guard cells
How is water transported to the leaves?
Taken up by roots from the soil and taken to the leaf through the xylem
How does the plant release energy (glucose)?
Cellular respiration
What is starch for?
To store extra glucose to be broken down at a later date
What is cellulose for?
Made out of glucose to strengthen cell walls
