Long Bone Structure Flashcards
What are the 5 parts of a long bone?
epiphysis, diaphysis, articular cartilage, periosteum, medulla
What is the epiphysis?
ends of bone
What is the diaphysis?
shaft of the bone
What is articular cartilage?
cartilage covering the ends of bone
What is the periosteum?
membrane covering the entire bone
What is the medulla?
within diaphysis, contains bone marrow
Where is the proximal epiphysis?
closest to the body’s center
Where is the distal epiphysis?
farthest away from the body’s center
What is the medullary cavity?
chamber filled with bone marrow
What is the endosteum?
lining of the medullary cavity
What are the two types of bone tissue?
compact and spongy
Where is compact tissue located in a long bone?
wall of the diaphysis
Where is spongy cancellous tissue located in a long bone?
epiphysis
What is red marrow?
produces blood cells
What is yellow marrow?
fat storage
