Joints Flashcards
What are the three types of joints?
synarthrotic, amphiarthroic, diarthrotic
What are synarthrotic joints?
immovable joints, called sutures
What is an example of a synarthrotic joint?
skull sutures (coronal, lambdoidal, sagittal, squamous)
What is an amphiarthrotic joint?
slightly moveable joint
What is an example of an amphiarthrotic joint?
vertebrae
What is a diarthrotic joint?
freely movable joints
What is a diarthrotic joint?
freely movable joints
What are the four types of diarthrotic joints?
ball & socket, pivot, hinge, saddle
What are examples of ball & socket joints?
- shoulder joints (humerus bone in socket of pectoral girdle)
- hip joints (femur bone in socket of pelvic girdle)
What are examples of hinge joints?
- interphalangeal joints between phalanges of fingers/toes
- b/w the humerus and ulna & radius
- b/w the tibia & fibula and talus bone in foot
Where are hinge joints located?
between two or more bones where the bones can only move along one axis to flex or extend
What is a pivot joint?
permits rotary movement of bones
What is an example of a pivot joint?
the pivot joint at the base of the skull connects C1 (atlas) to C2 (axis)
What are examples of saddle joints?
- the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb
- the calcaneocuboid joint of the heel
