Bone Fractures Flashcards
What is a comminuted fracture?
bone shatters in 3+ pieces (fragments)
What is an open/compound fracture?
skin is pierced by the bone
What is an oblique fracture?
angled pattern in bone
What is a spiral fracture?
bone is broken in a twisting motion
What is a transverse fracture?

How many Salter-Harris classifications are there?
5
What is a Salter-Harris fracture?
involves the epiphyseal plate (growth plate), often occurs to children
What is a type I Salter-Harris fracture?
(s)traight across, disrupts the growth plate
What is a type II Salter-Harris fracture?
(a)bove, involves a break in the growth plate up into the metaphysis
What is a type III Salter-Harris fracture?
(l)ower or be(l)ow, intra-articular fractures through the growth plate that extends across the epiphysis
What is a type IV Salter-Harris fracture?
(t)wo or (t)hrough, cross the growth plate, epiphysis, and metaphysis.
What is a type V Salter-Harris fracture?
(er)asure of growth plate or crush, compression injury to the growth plate
