Bone Growth Flashcards
What is the process of bone growth called?
ossification
How does ossification occur?
bones first form as hyaline cartilage, then gradually changes into bone tissue
What are osteoblasts?
creates osteocytes, builds bone
What are osteoclasts?
bone resorption, consumes bone
What is the epiphyseal disk?
the growth plate, a band of cartilage between the epiphysis and diaphysis
What is Heterotopic Ossification (HO)?
abnormal bone growth in the non-skeletal tissues (muscle, tendons, other soft, connective tissue)
What is the difference between a young hand and an adult hand?
ossification is complete in an adult hand
What is bone growth in FOP due to?
a mutation in a gene for BMP (bone morphogenetic protein). as a result, the receptor stays in an βONβ state
What are Noggin and Gremlin?
inhibitors of BMP signaling
What can be done for FOP?
gene therapy, steroid injections, find other inhibitors
