Disability-related competencies needed as nurses: Langage and communication

A
  • Address the person and ask about his/her preferred method to communication.
  • Be aware of and use preferred vocabulary regarding disability
  • Use alternative interviewing strategies (yes/no instead of open-ended questioning) to facilitate communication
  • Avoid assumptons about cognitive or intellectual limitations based on physical disabilities.
  • Use alternative communication strategies
  • Understand alternative communication methods (eg. for phone communication with patient who are deaf)
