Problems with human functioning are categorized in three overlapping domains:
- Impairments
- Activity limitations
- Participation restrictions
Disability is
refer to the negative aspects of the interaction between an individual (with a health condition) and that individual’s contextual factors (environmental and personal factors)
Disability is a human rights issues related to:
- Experience inequities
- Denial of autonomy (confining to institutions, involuntary sterilization, regarded as incompetent)
- Subject to violations of dignity (violence, abuse)
2 main models to understand disability:
- Medical model
- Social model
Medical model of disability:
- Focused on the individual
- Focused on disability
Social nodel of disability:
- Focused on society’s barriers
- Focused on person
- Expert on their requirements
Ableism is
refer to discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities. (Also know as anapirophobia, anaprirism, and disability discrimination)
Common types of negative encounters: toward people living with disability :
- Ignoring/minimizing their knowledge
- Detached interpersonal interactions
- Placing a negative skew on their quality of life
- Power differential
- Lack of HCP knowledge and difficulty taking them holistically
- Assumption of asexuality and childlessness
Disability-related competencies needed as nurses: Langage and communication
- Address the person and ask about his/her preferred method to communication.
- Be aware of and use preferred vocabulary regarding disability
- Use alternative interviewing strategies (yes/no instead of open-ended questioning) to facilitate communication
- Avoid assumptons about cognitive or intellectual limitations based on physical disabilities.
- Use alternative communication strategies
- Understand alternative communication methods (eg. for phone communication with patient who are deaf)
One conceptual framework through which disability-related content and experiences can be understood by nurses and use as an approach to the individual who has a disability:
