Liver Disease Flashcards
What is cirrhosis of the liver?
chronic, irreversible damage that impairs function (looks lumpy and hard)
Main causes of cirrhosis?
Hep BCD, NAFLD,alcohol=75%
What is Non-alcohol steatohepatitis (NASH)
more severe because more inflammation
What is the treatment for NAFLD
NONE- diet and exercise
lipid control
What is the pathogenesis of alcohol hepatitis
alcohol deposits fat b/c stops mitochondria
then lipids peroxidation= ROS
stims neutrophils= lots of cytokines like TNF alpha= fibrosis
WHat are the symptoms of cirrhosis
ascites-fluid in tummy b/c low flow
purpura=bruising-b/c low clotting factors
pitted edema
bad breath
jaundice
encephalopathy
Systemic symptoms of cirrhosis
bleed
HTN in liver
low hormones
increased toxins
Liver Function Tests
THESE SHOULD NOT BE IN BLOOD= they spew their contents
AST - if higher than ALT= Alcohol
ALT-more liver specific
albumin
bilirubin

What is the common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma
Hepatitis C
How to treat hepatocellular carcinoma
surgery
chemoembolism
radiation
What common metastasis ends up in the liver
colon cancer
How does cancer impact function
block function and pinch off flow
