What are the 3 main functions of the liver?
Storage, Synthesis and metabolism(detoxification)
Name 3 general symptoms of liver disease
Nausea, fatigue, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain
What are the 3 features of cirrhosis?
Fibrosis, hepatocyte necrosis and nodules
Is cirrhosis reversible or irreversible?
Irreversible
By which 3 mechanisms can alcohol affect the liver?
Fatty change, Alcoholic hepatitis then cirrhosis
Does Hep B & C have a vaccine or cure?
Hep B = vaccine, no cure
Hep c = no vaccine, cure
During acute infection is hep B & C symptomatic?
Hep B = symptomatic, Hep C = Asymptomatic
What is Hereditary Haemochromatosis?
Increased absorption of iron and deposition in liver
What is Wilsons Disease?
Reduced secretion of copper that accumulates in tissues
Where are the most important sites of varices in portal hypertension?
Oesophageal, Anorectal, Umbilical
What is Biliary Colic?
Temporary obstruction of a gallstone in the cystic duct, usually a few hours after eating
What is acute cholecystitis?
Impaction of a stone in the cystic duct, murphys sign positive
What is acute cholangitis?
Infection of the biliary tree, charcots triad. Usually caused by impacted CBD stone.
