Anatomy Flashcards
Name the 4 layers of the bowel
Mucosa, submucosa, external muscle layers, serosa
What does the epithelial layer of mucosa do?
selectively permeable, promote absorption, produce hormones & mucus
What does the lamina propria of the mucosa do?
produce antibodies & contain lymphoid nodules and macrophages
What does the muscularis mucosae of the mucosa do?
keeps epithelium in contact with gut contents and keeps it mobile to prevent stasis and infection
What type of epithelia is in the gut?
Stratfied squamous in oesopahgus and distal anus, simple columnar everywhere else
What do goblet cells do?
sit between enterocytes, produce mucus that stops friction, chemical damage and inflammation
Which cells line gastric mucosa and produce mucus?
Foveolar cells
What are the permenant folds in the small intestine called?
Plicae circulares
What are the temporary fold in the stomach called?
Rugae
What are the folds in the large bowel called?
Sacculations
What do the crypts in the large and small intestine do?
Contain stem cells, paneth cells and enteroendocrine cells
How much saliva is produced per day?
1.5L
What are the 3 anterolateral muscles called?
external obliques, internal obliques, transverse abdominis
What is the name of the fascia under the transverse abdominis?
Transversalis fascia
What is an aponeurosis?
Thin sheet like tendon
