Lithium Flashcards
treatments for biopolar disorder
mood stabilizers: lithium, valproate (welcome to the festiVal), carbamazepine (Ice Carving), lamotrigine for maintainenece only (llama jacket), antipsychotics only acute mania (paintings on mountain)
*all others treat acute and maintain
lithium side effects
*narrow therapeutic window (narrow window of opportunity to get off lift)
acute toxicity = GI distress, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (nauseous guy on lift)
chronic toxicity = neurology symptoms - tremor and ataxia (late trembling girl on lift, falling guy)
hypothyroidism - weight gain, sry skin, hair loss, constipation (undone bowtie on penguin by hefty snowboarder)
teratogenic - ebsteins anomaly (tarantula hat)
nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (insipidus fountain)
things that increase lithium levels
thiazide diuretics (thighs on high dive)
NSAIDS
*decrease clearance of lithium by reducing the GFR (low clearance sign)
Ebstein’s anomaly
atrialization of the right ventricle, ASD and malformed tricuspid (large right head on snowman), kids avoid outdoors
