second generation antipsychotic names
quetiapine, olanzapine, risperidone, aripiprazole (Quiet please, Only Whispering is Appropriate), ziprasidone (zipper), clozapine (closet)
how SGAs work
some blocking of D2 receptors in the CNS, but mostly blocking serotonin receptors (5HT2A)
what SGAs treat
treat positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia (mustache blocking both ears)
treats treatment resistant depression (resistant happy and sad masked wine bottle)
manage OCD with SSRIs (person fixing the painting)
tourette syndrome - only risperidone (marionette)
SGA side effects
block H1 histamine receptors = sedation (bee swatter)
block alpha-1 receptors = orthostatic hypotension (a candle)
block muscarinic receptors = dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, urinary retention (mostly clozapine - atropine in wonderland behind the closet)
weight gain, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia (olanzapine and clozapine - fat face with butter and candy)
torsades de pointes
clozapine specific side effects
agranulocytosis (melting snad timer)
myocarditis and cardiomyopathy (surreal heart)
lower seizure threshold (shaking clock)
which SGA has the highest likelihood of EPSEs
risperidone (whispering man to the guy with the extra pyramid hat)
