Atypical Antidepressants Flashcards
atypical antidepressants
bupropion (ball pro)
mirtazapine (mirth and misery cam)
trazadone
how AAs work
bupropion - NE and DA re-uptake inhibitor, no effect on serotonin* (NET DAT ball pro sign)
mirtazapine - block presynaptic a2 receptors (two blacked out alpha candles) causing increase in serotonin and NE (smiley face and n compass) also 5HT-2 and 5HT-3 receptor blocker (52 and 53 jersey hanging) H1 histamine antagonist (bee swatter)
bupropion uses
resembles amphetamines in structure = CNS activating effects = treat depression with hypersomnolence and low energy (guy yelling and arousing the sleepy guy)
treats tobacco dependence by reducing the urge to smoke (pros don’t smoke sign)
depression in people who have too many sexual side effects or weight gain with other agents
bupropion side effects
seizures especially at high doses and with people with eating disorders (shaking girl dunking, shaking girl binge eating = bulimia, shaking skinny girl = anorexia nervosa)
doesn’t cause sexual dysfunction (couple in love under bucket), doesn’t cause weight gain
mirtazapine uses
MDD (happy and sad mask on depression and insomnia depression with anorexia depression in elderly intolerant to other depression tx due to sexual side effects
mirtazapine side effects
sedation (H1 histamine antagonist)
weight gain (fat fan sleeping)
no sexual side effects (kiss cam)
trazadone works by
trombone player
serotonin modulator - antagonizes receptors (5HT) and inhibits re-uptake (smiley face drum with 52 jersey)
antagonizes a 1 receptors (blown out a-1 candle = vasodilation
H1 antagonist
no DA and NE effects
trazadone uses
depression with insomnia (sleepy team)
trazadone side effects
priapism due to vasodilation due to a1 antagonism (erect trombine)
not used with sickle cell disease and multiple myeloma
orthostatic hypotension (passed out coach)
sedation (bee swatter and sleepy team)
don’t give to elderly or those with other CNS depressives (benzos and barbiturates)
sexual dysfunction (rejected advances)
serotonin syndrome (autonomic instability, HTN)
