Lipoproteins Flashcards
What are the 5 types of lipoproteins?
Chylomicrons
VLDL -> IDL -> LDL
HDL
Where are chylomicrons formed?
Intestine
What do chylomicrons transport?
They bring dietary TAG from intestines to adipose and other tissues
Where are VLDLs formed?
Liver
What do VLDLs transport?
Transport synthesized TAG from the liver to adipose tissue and to skeletal and heart muscle
Where are IDLs formed?
They are formed via the processing of VLDLs in the circulation
What do IDLs transport?
Delivers remaining TAG and cholesterol to the liver.
Where are LDLs formed?
Formed via processing of IDLs in the circulation
What do LDLs transport?
Delivers cholesterol to the liver and other cells
Where are HDLs formed?
Mainly in the liver with some in the intestine.
What do HDLs transport?
They take cholesterol from peripheral cells and esterify it before transporting it to the liver
What are the other effects of HDLs?
Atheroprotective via enzymes such as paraoxonase that inhibit LDL oxidation
What is the main transport of exogenous lipid?
Chylomicrons
What is the main transport of endogenous lipid?
VLDL/IDL/LDL
What cofactor activates lipoprotein lipase?
Apo-CII
