Lipids Flashcards
Triglyceride
Consists of a glycerol backbone bonded with 3 fatty acids
Glycerol
Glycerol reacts with fatty acids to produce lipids
Ester bond
A bond between alcohol and carboxylic acids
Saturated
Made up of chains of carbon molecules that don’t have any double bonds of carbon
Unsaturated
There is at least 1 double bond within the fatty acid chain
Phospholipid
Molecule with 2 fatty acids and a modified phosphate group attached to the glycerol backbone
Hydrophilic
Molecule that is able to interact with water. They have charges that allow them to interact with water
Hydrophobic
A property of molecules that do not mix with water
Polar
Molecules with uneven distribution of charges so one side is positive while one is negative
Nonpolar
Molecules that have no charge because the electrons are finely distributed
Thermal insulator
Material that reduces the transfer of heat
