Enzyme Flashcards
Metabolite
A substance used when the body breaks down food, drugs or chemicals
Metabolism
The chemical reactions in the body’s cells that change food into energy
Catalyst
A chemical that speeds up chemical reactions
Activation energy
The minimum energy required for a reaction to occur
Active site
Specific region of an enzyme where a substrate binds and catalysis takes place or where chemical reactions occur
Substrate
The chemical reactants that enzymes bind to.
Complimentary site
The shape of the active site of an enzyme is complimentary to the shape of its specific substrate
Competitive inhibitor
Competitive inhibitors compete with the substrate for the active site. When the inhibitor binds, it occupies the active site without causing a reaction.
Non competitive inhibitor
Binds to a different site on the enzyme, changing the shape of the enzyme so that it cannot bind to the substrate effectively. This slows down the reaction by making the enzyme less active.
Immobilised enzyme
An enzyme that is attached to an insoluble material to prevent mixing with the product.
Enzyme substrate complex
As an enzyme and substrate come together, their interaction causes a small shift in the enzyme’s structure.
