Ligaments of the female reproductive system Flashcards
What are the 4 ligaments of the female reproductive system?
- broad ligament
- ovarian ligament
- suspensory ligament
- round ligament
The broad ligament can be folded over other structures to create other ligaments called
- mesovarium
- mesosalpinx
- mesometrium
What is the broad ligament?
it is a double layer peritoneum which folds and presses over structures to create other ligaments
What does the broad ligament contain?
round ligament, the fallopian tube, arteries, veins, lymphatics, nerve fibres, loose connective tissue
Where does the ovarian ligament extend?
from the uterus, near the attachment of the uterine tube to the medial surface of the ovary
Where does the suspensory ligament extend?
from the lateral surface of the ovary past the open end of the uterine tube to the pelvic wall
What major blood vessels passes through the suspensory ligament?
the ovarian artery and vein
Where does the round ligament run?
forward and downward between the two sheets of the broad ligament. It runs down deep in the inguinal canal to enter the labia majora
Where is the mesovarium located?
projecting from the posterior surface of the broad ligament and enclosing the ovary vascular supply not covering the ovary itself
Where is the mesosalpinx located?
traps the fallopian tubes
Where is the mesometrium located?
surround the uterus
