What is peer pressure?
When does it happen
Friends (or peers) can have a good/ bad influence on you. It happens when people want to be loved and accepted by others. It’s easier to be swayed to do things you wouldn’t normally do in a crowd. Some people think: if everyone else is doing it, why shouldn’t I?
What is negative peer pressure?
Friends ask you to join in a game to be nasty to others for fun. You may end up doing things you regret to impress your friends, although you know it’s wrong.
Give an example of positive peer pressure:
All studying together. Keeping fit together.
List strategies to help deal with negative peer pressure:
- Talk it through (talk to person who is making you feel uncomfortable. Explain your feelings and ask them to stop.
- Make the right friends (find friends who feel the same way as you do about things. It’s easier to avoid peer pressure if there are two/ three of you who say ‘no’
List strategies to deal with negative peer pressure:
- Talk it through
- Make the right friends
- Listen to your feelings (if your feelings tell you it isn’t right, don’t do it!)
- Make an excuse (think of a good excuse you can make if you are invited to do something you don’t want to do)
Why is it important to resist peer pressure?
The action can have long term effects. Eg. if an adolescent is pressured into drinking, he might become addicted and become an alcoholic, this can cause unhappiness in his own life and others long term.
