What are lines of latitude ?
Horizontal lines that run parallel to the equator. These lines can run both north or south of the equator
What are parallels ?
Another name for lines of latitude
What is the equator
The imaginary horizontal line that divides the earth into Northern and southern hemispheres
What are lines of longitudes
Vertical lines that meet at the north and south poles
What is a meridian
Another name for lines of longitude
What is the Northern hemisphere
The half of the earth above the equator
What is the southern hemisphere
The half of the earth below the equator
What is a sphere
Something with a round shape
e.g. Apple / Globe
What is a hemisphere
Half of a sphere
What does horizontal mean
A line that runs from east to west or across
What does vertical mean
A line that runs from north to south or up and down
What is the western hemisphere
The half of the earth from the Greenwich meridian west to the international date line
What is the Eastern hemisphere
The half of the earth from the Greenwich meridian east to the international date line
What is the Greenwich Meridian
The imaginary line that runs through Greenwich in London and divides the western and eastern hemispheres
What is the prime Meridian
Another name for the Greenwich meridian
What is a degree
A measurement of an angle between 2 Lines. Shown by the symbol “ ° “
What is a grid reference.
The position of a place which is given by naming the lines of latitude and longitude which cross through it.
E.g. the grid reference for Cape Town is 34°S; 18°E
Co-ordinates
Another name for a grid reference
What so a model
An exact copy of an object; a model can be a smaller or larger copy of the original; maps are smaller models of the land
What does reduced mean
Made smaller
