Level of Consciousness (responsiveness) Flashcards
consciousness
appropriate response ( rate and quality) to external stimuli; oriented to time, place, person, and purpose
confusion
inappropriate response to stimuli and decreased attention span and memory; inappropriate reactions to simple commands
lethargy (hypersomnia)
drowsineess or increased sleep time, able to be aroused, responds appropriately, possible falls asleep again immediately
delirum
confusion, disorder, decreased attention span, marked anxiety
coma
loss or lowering of consciousness
coma stage1
arousable for short periods to verbal, visible, or painful stimuli; simple motor and verbal responses, sluggish
coma stage2
light coma
simple motor and verbal(moaning) response to painful stimuli, mass motor movement or flexion avoidance response
coma stage 3
deep coma
decerbrate posturing to painful stimuli
(extension of body and limbs pronation of arms)
coma stage 4
flaccid muscles, papillary reflex absent, ventilatior; superficial and some deep reflexes present
brain death
presence of all of the following
2- EEG tracings 24hours apart indicate absence of brain waves; cerebral function absent for 24hours, faliure of cerebral perfusion, expert opinion rules out hypothermia or drug toxicity
syncope
temporary loss of consciousness associated with increased rate of respiration, tachycardia, pallor, perspiration, and coolness of skin
fugue state
dysfunction of consciousness (hours or days) in which the individual carries on purposeful activity that he or she doesn’t remember afterwards
amnesia
memory loss over time or for specific subjects; individual affected responds appropriately to external stimuli
