Lesson 9: Limiting Beliefs Flashcards
Why do we all have models in our heads?
We have models of the way the world works - it helps us make sense of situations we encounter
What happens when we come across a situation taht doesnt fit the model of the world we know
We switch from system 1 thinking to system 2 to examine it. But as soon as we find a similar model that we already know, we don’t examine/question any further, we just adopt the similar model. CONFIRMATION BIAS
If you were Indiana Jones, how would you dig a persons mind when triggered
- TRIGGER
- Causes a BEHAVIOR
- which was caused by a THOUGHT
- which has an underlying EMOTION
- starts from the ROOT CAUSE
When can root causes occur?
They can happens all the time, or they can be big one-time experiences.
They typically happen in childhood because thats when PFC is not developed and experiences lie in the limbic system.
Describe Carl Jung’s quote of inherited patterns
“The greatest burden a child can bear is that of the parent”
What is Carl Jung’s theory of inherited patterns
Looks looks to us as God-like - depends on us for everything. Looks for permission and acceptance. We learn we need to comply otherwise we will be rejected or punished. Sometimes this over attachment goes into adulthood.
Parents pass on the hopes/expectations of our past generations and theirs onto their own kids. We have a choice to be strict like our parents or we could overcompensate by being too linient or find a middle ground.
How can you help someone REFRAME their thinking? Name the 7 steps
- UNDERSTAND - Get a strong grasp of the emotional value the cleint is assigning to this and make your client see this.
- IDENTIFY - the limiting beliefs and the thoughts behind the behavior or trigger
- CHALLENGE this limiting belief - Turn their statements into a question and get to root cause.
- Find EVIDENCE to support you - Make the client see that their limiting beliefs is not ALWAYS or NEVER true.
- Get a difference PERSPECTIVE from others close to the client to help client see it differently. Maybe get them to accept it if need be.
- REFORMULATE the limiting belief with a YET at the end to take away the power of the limiting belief.
- REPEAT or chant your new found belief because now you understand it and can believe in it (vs. saying an afformation without understanding it)
How can a fixed mindset protect you vs. a growth mindset
Fixed mindset can be very comfortable and you wont try new things. It protects you from having your mindset proven wrong. E.g. trying something new may prove that you’re not that good at that something afterall, so why try it?
What are the two key ingriedients to success?
Growth mindset - learning new things
Grit - Persevrance and endurance to keep going and not get distracted (fixed mindset)
A balance of the two is key!
What a powerful way to explain growth to clients
If they want to grow or change, the ONLY way is to try new things and make mistakes.
What’s the best way to look at a bad decision? Reframe it.
- What was the decision? (bought ANET stock at $285)
- Why was it BAD? (lost money, could have waited and bought it cheaper)
- What did you LOOSE? What would have happened if you had not taken the decision? What GOOD would have come from NOT taking the decision? (I would still have my money)
- What LEARNINGS did you GAIN? negative consequences/BAD would have happened if you had NOT taken the decision? (I would not have learnt the importance of timing with other reports (inflation, competitor)
- REFARME - So now, what POSITIVE consequences can you think of TAKING the decision you did? (I’ll use this info for next trade and hopefully not loose more money in the future)
Name the author of GRIT and GROWTH MINDSET concepts?
Growth Mindset - Carol Dweck
Grit - Angela Duckworth (Harvard)
What is growth mindset?
It is the ability to seperate your identity from the challenge - not taking it personally. Particularly hard for ppl who think of themselves as good performers.
Instead focusing on the effort you put into the challenge. And enjoy the process of learning.
