Lession 2: Operating Systems Flashcards
- Who is the creator of the System1 vs Sys2 thinking approach?
- What is it?
- Daniel Kahnemann - book: Thinking Fast & Slow
- System 1 is the automatic/autonomous thought patterns that govern our body, vs. System 2 is the slower, rational thinking that allows for reasoning, problem solving
What % of time are we in system 1 vs 2?
System 1 - 95%, System 2 - 5%
Name 3 key additional differences between Sys 1 vs 2?
- S1 is energy conserving and barely uses any energy VS S2 uses a lot of energy
- S1 is autopilot so it does things without thinking about them like driving VS S2 is deliberate and takes time to learn, rationalize & start to form habits
- S1 just knows black and white, whereas S2 can be indecisive, grey and delive in subtleties
How do habits build in our Sys 1 vs 2 brains?
We start with Sys 2 (slow, deliberate) thinking and this can be hard & you may not be any good at it.
But then with repitition it goes into sys2 and becomes 2nd nature. E.g. Chess
When does stress occur (explain in System thinking)?
When System 1 (fast/intuitive) doesnt allow Sys2 to take over to solve a problem => STRESS!
- What is Ego Depletion and how does it change through the day?
- How can you prevent it?
- Ego Depletion (nothing to do with EGO) is your mental energy levels. Starts high in the beginning of the day and depletes gradually.
- If you are intrinsically motivated to do something, you wont deplete your ego. E.g./ doing what you love and are in flow state.
What is DMN? Explain it.
Default Mode Network
A network of areas in our brain that light up when we are daydreaming, in flow state or getting very creative. Very visual and lights up the same zones in our brain as when we dream when asleep.
Not Sys1 or 2 - almost sys 3
Does DMN take up more or less energy than Sys 1 or 2?
It takes up as much energy as Sys 2 (logical) thinking. I
How would you explain DMN in layman terms?
It’s a MENTAL TIME TRAVEL to past or future - it’s our DREAM STATE where we visualize.
Getting bored is great for it - sparks DMN.
Name 3 pros and cons of the 3 systems?
System 1
Pro: Energy Efficient, quick
Con: Only knows black and white, no room for greys
System 2
Pro: Solves problems, logical, planning ahead
Con: Energy sucking and slow, Overthinking and not creative
System 3
Pro: Creative, flow state
Con: Rumination on negative feelings esp. shame/anger/depression which can lead to self-inflicted wounds that go into System 1. Most active in LONELY people.
When dealing with a client, what system thinking should you be in? WHat sys is client likely in?
ME: Be in Sys 2/logical/reasoning
CLIENT: Sys 1 or DMN where he is ruminating
