Lesson 1 Flashcards
WHat’s the ultimate quote from Brain Academy & who is it by?
“Until you make the subconscious, conscious, it will shape your life and you will call it fate”
- Carl Jung
- Swiss psycologist
What % of our brain i conscious vs unconscious?
Iceberg - 5% conscious vs 95% subsonscious?
What is blindsight? How is it related to conscious vs subconscious thinking?
Blindsight = When blind ppl can still walk through a corridor full of obstables effortlessly.
Why = Cuz they non-conscious processing is still working even though their visual cortex is damaged. Their eyes send signals to diff part of their brain that helps them instinctually know where things are.
How does conscious vs subscious change with age?
Born - Purely instinct & non conscious, no PFC
Adolescence - Environment/social is very imp and influences decisions but instinct is subdued
Adults - PFC is fully developed and rationale thinking is fully in action. Detach more easily from others. Form our own experiences.
What are the 3 basic SURVIVAL instincts?
- Stay away from danger
- Energy efficiency (makes you lazy)
- Procreation (shuts down PFC)
What are the two rules of experience? Or having an experience?
- Repeat what is pleasurable
- Avoid what is unpleasureable
- Who came up with the PYGMALLION EFFECT theory?
- What is it? Apply it.
- Dr. Rosenthal from Harvard
- It states that when you expect something from someone, they actually do it cuz they believe in it too. E.g. parents saying their kids “can do it” - setting a high expectation and kid delivers
- What are the limitations of Pygmallion effect?
- What are the 2 essential components needed when setting high expectations/pygmallion effect?
- Don’t set unrealistic expectations, dont be dillusional about kids abilities
- You can set high expectations but coach ppl to have GRIT & GROWTH MINDSET in order to achieve them
