Lesson 6: Neuroplasticity Flashcards
How long does it take for a new neuron to form and die
New neuron takes 3 weeks to fully form, and 85% of them can die within 48hrs
Whats the diff between Neurogenesis vs Neuroplasticity?
GENESIS: Birth of new neurons
PLASTICITY: Ability to form new neural connections (could be between old or new neurons).
Where does Nueroplasticity happen the most in our brains
Within the Neocortex (outter most part of our brain) as we have more glial cells here. Glials help with Myelination production (which cements the connection), pruning and pasting. This makes the neocortex the hub for plasticity.
Where does plasticity happen the least in our brains?
Cerebellum - even though 50% of our neurons exist here. Very few glial cells live here.
What are the 3 levels of plasticity?
- Chemical - Temporary fluctuations in neurochemicals or hormones, no permanent changes - e.g. trying new food
- Structural - Actual change in nueral connections - new connections formed when learning something new
- Functional - When part of your brain ends up doing something its not supposed to,e.g. your visual cortext starts processing audio when you are blind (in addition to occipital lobe that normally processes audio) -> end result is extra sensitive hearing in blind
What are the 3 rules of increasing Neuroplasticity?
- Focus AND Repeat
- Neurons that fire together, wire together
- Use it or Loose it
What’s the best way to acitivate the first rule of Nueroplasticity in your clients
FOCUS - Visualize so that they can see details and activate their Thallamus to focus on what they want to achieve
AND (or wont work)
REPEAT - Make sure you say it multiple times
What is the 2nd rule of plasticity also know as? What does it say?
Hebbs law - Says that when 2 nuerons are often activated at the same time, they will start associating with each other.
Hebb’s axiom reminds us that when you repeatan experience over and over, the brain learns to trigger the same neuronseach time.
Give an example of Hebb’s law
Hebbs salw of plasticity - cells that fire together, wire together
E.g. Associating Rishi Sunak with a rich guy eating Sumaac.
What role do glial cells have in Use it or Loose It
Glial cells are highest in Neocortex vs Cerebelum where movement is coded. So you wont forget walking, riding a bike etc. but you will forget precise stuff which is stored in Neocortex.
Glial cells remove unused connections is the brain that are tagged as such.
Why is forgetting a blessing?
Otherwise we would rem every detail of trauma, pain.
What are the 3 parts of a habit? How can you change habbits based on this?
- Cue
- Action/Routine
- Reward/punishment
Change any one of the above
E.g. I’m tired so I want to drink coffee and get an energy boost
Change Cue - Dont be tired, sleep more
Change action - replace coffee with tea
Change reward - psych yourself to think smell of coffee is disgusting.
Change ID - Psych yourself into thinking you are a tea drinker only
Whats the diff between intrinsic vs extrinsic motivations?
Intrinsic - when you love something, dont care for the reward
Extrinsic - When you only care for the reward, e.g. NY rezzies
When starting a new habit what should you keep in mind?
- Be very very specific (time, location, frequency etc.)
- Make it top of mind - Repeat or make visually clear
- Make it as easy/convenient as possible
- Reward yourself if you do it, and make it hurt if you dont
Whats the but rule?
Whatever is heard before the BUT in a sentence is usually forgotten.
Instead put whats imp AFTER the but.
E.g. your scores in math are poor BUT I love you
