Lesson 7: Enriched Environments Flashcards
Define syaptogenesis
Formation of more axons on a cell which leads to more connections with other cells.
From LMNNOP, which 3 factors count the most for synaptogenesis?
- Movement (M)
- Love/Social interaction (L)
- Novelty/Learning (N)
How do you build cognitive reserve?
Always learning, interacting socially as much as possible and not be alone.
Esp imp if you have Alzhiemers/Dimentia in your family
Whats the frequency of the Ebbinghaus Forgetting curve? Describe its axis and shape.
Day 0 - Initial learning
1 hour - 1st review
1 day
1 week
X-axis: Time
Y-axis: % of info retention
Spikes at 1 hr, 1 day, 1 week and 1 mo when repetition/revision occurs
Name 5 tricks for learning & retaining info
- Three boxes - repeat every day, every other day, every 3 days and move things from one box to the other when you can rem, otherwise keep in the box
- Write things down/ take notes on paper
- Flash cards - qn & A
- Acronyms with 1st letter
- Change Settings - Mundane task (do it in a quiet, clean space), Creative task (do it in a cluttered/stimulating space)
Describe the relationship between Myelination & age
Myelination starts at the back of the brain from Cerebellum and moves to the front into PFC. This is why kids must learn things at the early age because what they learn eventually gets Myelinated and is hard to change after. No loss of signal. Its also why its hard to be as proficient as someone who learnt at an early age.
Pros and Cons of Myelination
Pros - make sthe connections stronger and reinforces what you know. NO loss of signal due to myelin
Cons - Less flexibility and hard to change/unlearn
At what age does the brain myelination complete?
25
When Myelination degrades, what condition do you have? How does it impact?
Multiple Schlerosis
Person cant move, think or function normally, nuerons are firing everywhere
Name & desribe the 3 types of learning environments
- Impoverished - Not stimulating enough but being bored is also good
- Enriched - Right level and type of stimulation to generate creativity & focus - includes friction
- Toxic - Social meida, video games, bad company, work stress & reltionship stress - which leads to too much dopamine or cortisol
What’s the deal with Queen’s Gambit?
Elizabeth Harmon learns chess moves slowly at first (system 2) and repeats them enough to make them into long term memory in systerm 1 (fast). So she goes from slow thinking to fast thinking.
Is sys 1 or sys 2 thinking better for mastery?
None. You want to go from Sys 2 to sys 1 eventually thru repetition - then it becomes mastery
What are the two ways you should try to build your knowledge
- Diversity - learning something new
- Depth - Learn more of something you already know
Whats the imp important factor to push your learning
Friction - dont make things easy - E.g. take stairs, sit in a backless chair and make learning tough thru flashbards
