a shared set of belief systems, values, practices, and assumptions which determine how we interact with and interpret the world

how can culture be a barrier in healthcare
if a provider and patient have different views on how the world works, what is important in life, and what causes an illness or how to treat an illness, then this can cause potential misunderstandings between the patient and provider

This is due to active culture which is different for each person and constantly changes and grows

what is acculturation?
process of adapting to a new culture without losing one’s original culture
what is assimilation
to fully become part of a different society, country, or culture other than the original

when a person identifies with 2 cultures
