- interpreter is alert to potential cultural barriers to understanding
- interpreter explains to patient what she wants to tell the provider or vice versa
- the interpreter briefly tells the provider or patient the appropriate information, stating it as something that is generally true in the culture; avoid stereotyping
- interpreter lets doctor decide what to do with the information
- interpreter goes back to conduit interpreting as soon as possible
